Adaptation Lead for Climate Adaptation Support Activity (US-based Remote)

The USAID-funded Climate Adaptation Support Activity (CASA), implemented by Tetra Tech International Development (www.tetratech.com/intdev) is currently accepting expressions of interest for an Adaptation Lead. This position is preferably based in Washington DC with consideration of other remote US-based locations.

USAID’s Climate Adaptation Support Activity (CASA) is a five-year activity that provides strategic support to USAID Missions and USAID/Washington to advance effective adaptation mainstreaming, programming, and scaling meaningful change. USAID’s climate adaptation work aims to increase the resilience of human and natural systems to climate change impacts through improved use of information, planning, and action. USAID helps communities prepare for climate change and manage its impacts while protecting and advancing critical development priorities. CASA supports USAID’s climate adaptation work by providing technical services, products, and support including assessments, analytical work, thought leadership, inclusive capacity development, and convening, partnering, and coalition strengthening. CASA works with USAID, government, civil society, local community, and private sector partners to help USAID implement its Climate Strategy and the President’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE).

Position Description

The Adaptation Lead will provide leadership and technical expertise to CASA including working with USAID Missions, Washington, and partners to support adaptation mainstreaming, programming, and scaling to effect change at meaningful scales. The Adaptation Lead will design and lead technical activities under the program, including setting priorities for CASA and proactively working to identify the strategic and forward-looking adaptation and resilience programming needs of USAID.

Responsibilities:

*Provides technical leadership to the CASA program and individual work orders and buy-ins initiated by USAID.

*Provides technical guidance in exploring emerging areas of adaptation, contributes to thought leadership, and provides technical direction to staff, subcontractors, and partners.

*Participates in work plan development, strategic planning, and adaptation framework development.

*Develops and reviews activity scopes of work and facilitates training, deliverables, and communications to integrate adaptation approaches.

*Directly manages, coordinates and supports related technical activities, analyses, and research.

*Leads technical task design and implementation, contributes to deliverables, and manages discrete tasks and activities as needed.

*Coordinates and oversees STTA and subcontractors for discrete technical activities.

Qualifications:

*Master’s degree in climate science, environmental studies, natural resources management, international development, or relevant field.

*At least 10 years of experience in climate change adaptation and resilience, sustainable development, transformative and inclusive adaptation, climate justice, or relevant technical experience.

*Credible track record designing adaptation programming, including transformative and inclusive approaches and cross-sectoral strategies.

*Experience assessing adaptation capacities and implementing local capacity development initiatives.

*Strong networking capability with government, private sector, and non-government entities.

*Professional proficiency in English is required.

* Ability to travel internationally.

* U.S. citizenship or a valid U.S. work permit is mandatory.

Preferred qualifications:

* Three to five years of experience providing technical support to complex USAID-funded programs preferred.

*A history of collaboration and fostering inclusive, locally led climate change adaptation activities.

*A track record of success in supporting country-led climate change adaptation planning and climate finance efforts, such as NDCs and NAPs.

*In-depth knowledge of climate change adaptation policy issues at international (e.g., UNFCCC) and national levels and ability to link these policy processes to USAID programming.

*Proficiency in Spanish or French.
