Accountant

Purpose: The part-time Accountant will manage all accounting of Malteser International Americas’ (MIA) finances in New York. The Accountant supports and advises the teams and acts as a financial controller towards all MI Americas finances. Further, the Accountant ensures accurate and timely financial records, maintains all bookkeeping, invoices, vouchers, receipts and disbursements, general ledger, analyzes, controlling, budgeting, annual statement, and supports audit preparation and annual tax filing. 

Responsibilities and tasks:

• Manage all accounting transactions.
• Prepare budget forecasts and financial statements in time.
• Create/monitor expense and cash flow forecast.
• Reconcile balance sheets, profit and loss, and summary reconciliation reports.
• Prepare reconciliations to donor/CRM database.
• Prepare monthly journal entries, manage grant activities, restricted & reserve funds.
• Report on the company’s financial health and liquidity.
• Ensure full compliance with USGAAP and donor regulations.
• Provide financial reports and interpret financial information to managerial staff while recommending further courses of action.
• Support and accompany annual audit, tax documentation, and Form 990 preparation.

Requirements

• Work experience as an Accountant
• Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Hands-on experience with accounting software like QuickBooks
• Advanced MS Excel skills including pivot tables
• Experience with general ledger functions
• Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills
• BSc in Accounting, Finance or relevant degree
• Additional certification (CPA or CMA) is a plus
