The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA-ROLI) seeks an intern to support the Legal Reform Fund’s (LRF), a global program with current programming in Mexico, Guatemala, Timor-Leste, and Indonesia. LRF is a global three-year project supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues (S/GWI) to address barriers to women’s full and effective participation in economic life in five key areas: access to institutions; removing employment barriers; property acquisition, ownership, and management; building credit; and ability to travel.

Among other activities, the intern will support the team conducting technical assistance activities on issues related to women’s economic empowerment. This will include helping with planning and implementing activities, attending events and webinars, and conducting targeted research. The intern will have the opportunity to work with field-based staff and consultants, as well as pro bono attorneys from three global law firms.

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct targeted research on ABA-ROLI LRF’s core thematic areas including women’s economic empowerment and rule of law. We are open to self-directed research projects if you have ideas for research related to our program countries and five key areas.

  • Assist the ABA-ROLI LRF team with drafting and reviewing external communications and presentations.

  • Assist the ABA ROLI LRF team with coordinating interviews and meetings with stakeholders in Mexico, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.

  • Research and monitor major political and social developments in the countries in which LRF works, presenting findings to the team on a weekly basis.

Relevant Program/Area of Study:

  • Interest and/or background in rule of law, women’s economic empowerment, international development, civil society and government engagement, democratic development, human rights, or other relevant subjects.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous research experience.

  • Applicants must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Previous work with social media and communications

  • Proficiency in foreign language(s) is a plus (but not required)​
