Why CARE Nederland?

CARE Nederland is part of CARE, an international development organization. CARE International (CI) is one of the world’s leading multi-mandate aid agencies, fighting poverty and injustice in over 100 countries around the world. CARE’s Vision 2030 shapes the confederation’s work in every context. One of the six outcome areas that CARE jointly works towards is Climate Justice.

The CARE Climate Justice Center (CJC) unites CARE’s work on climate justice, a key priority area in the CARE Vision 2030. The CJC aims to support and strengthen the ability of CARE members and partners to increase resilience and to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change. This is done by strengthening the capacities of the most vulnerable communities and by growing CARE’s impact, influence and income to better serve the needs of these communities.

The CJC consists of 9 CARE staff seconded and hosted by different CARE members across the world. The CJC is hosted by CARE Nederland and is accountable to a CJC Council of directors, consisting of the 5 investing members (CARE Denmark, CARE International UK, CARE Deutschland, CARE France and CARE Nederland). The CJC Director is administratively based at CARE Nederland (CNL) and is line managed by the CNL CEO who is also the chair of the CJC Council of Directors. The CJC Director is also a member of the CI Program Team and has a direct reporting line to the CJC Council of Directors and to the CI Program Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  1. Strategic leadership and coordination of the CJC (70%)
    • Lead and support the CJC team in the implementation of the CJC annual workplan FY23 (running up to end of June ’23);
    • Keep oversight on CJC income and expenditure over FY23 in close collaboration with CARE NL finance department;
    • Coordinate the engagement with CJC external donors;
    • Lead the collaborative development of a CJC workplan FY24 (running from 1 July ’23 – end of June ’24) based on the needs and interests of the investing CARE members and global CARE confederation;
    • Under the leadership of the chair of the CJC Council of Directors, agree with CARE member offices on their commitments and contributions to the CJC in FY24;
    • Lead the finalization of the CJC FY24 budget in close collaboration with the chair of the CJC Council of Directors and CARE NL Finance Department;
    • Lead and support the CJC team in the development of the CJC Annual Report FY23;
    • Lead the preparations of the CJC annual team meeting in the third week of October 2023 in The Hague.
  2. Leadership and coordination of Climate Justice engagement in the global CARE confederation (30%)
  • Maintain lines of communication with, and coordinate the implementation of CARE Climate Justice Strategy 2030 between all CARE Members, the CI Program team, and the relevant CI Senior Leadership Teams;
  • Lead key internal CARE policy processes related to climate justice (e.g. CARE Climate and Environment policy);
  • Lead and coordinate the ongoing engagements with CARE members with regards to the implementation of program support or training;
  • Broker demand and supply for support on climate justice related topics within CARE.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum qualification of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline ;
  • Minimum ten years of working experience, including;
    • Substantial knowledge and experience in international development in the context of climate change and resilience;
    • Substantial experience in working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders;
    • Substantial knowledge and experience of working in complex international networks, partnerships and alliances;
  • Excellent collaboration, relationship building and networking skills;
  • Ability to work remotely and in a dynamic virtual teamwork environment and to manage and be part of a global team;
  • Excellent command of English, both in speaking and writing; second languages an advantage.
