In our Privacy Preserving Machine Learning initiative, we apply privacy and confidentiality preserving techniques to enable domain-adapted, personalized AI experiences. We closely collaborate with multiple research teams and product groups across the globe. Some of the problems we are currently working on are: empirically evaluate privacy risk under real world adversaries; enable differential privacy to large foundational models; formalize privacy properties; investigate new model architectures that respect privacy and confidentiality by design.
We are looking for research interns to help advance the state of the art of privacy enhancing technologies (PETs). The ideal candidate will have background in Privacy Enhancing Technologies or Natural Language processing and the motivation and ambition to apply this in a real world setting.
Responsibilities
Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. - Must be accepted or currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- Must have at least 1 year of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications and software development.
Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with privacy enhancing technologies and/or natural language processing.
- Experience in conducting research and writing peer-reviewed publications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Be able to work in a cross-functional and multi-disciplinary setting across research and product.
