The Business Administration Apprenticeship consists of a 24-month opportunity to learn and to join the Council’s Business Support Service. The service brings together business and personal support staff across the directorates with focus on our ‘Be Islington’ values. We help the smooth running of services including Adults, Children’s, Youth Offending and Fairer Together. Apprentices will have the opportunity to work in the different service areas whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Business Administrator apprenticeship qualification.
You will gain an understanding of the work of the different service areas and undertake various tasks including scheduling meetings, data handling, responding to enquiries and supporting to process payments. You will work in a supported learning environment and dedicated time will be given for your development.
To Apply For This Apprenticeship, You Must
- Be aged 16 or above and
- Be unemployed (or working no more than 16 hours)
- An Islington resident or Islington care leaver or a student at an Islington secondary school currently or within the last 12 months.
- Not currently qualified or skilled in Business Administration at Level 3 or similar discipline.
As part of the recruitment process you will need to pass the course entry tests in Maths and English.

Main duties of the job
Working as a Business Support Apprentice for the council you will:
- Assist with scheduling meetings and managing diaries
- Carry out day to day administration including filing, photocopying, post and data handling
- Input and gather data and support the team to manage data in line with council policies
- Deliver a high quality service on a face to face, telephone and email basis
- Support the team to process payments to suppliers and process petty cash transactions
- Develop strong professional relationships with your own team and with others we work alongside and to whom we provide services
Training And Development – Within Your Role You Will
- Complete a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeshipqualification funded by the Council. If you have not already achieved Level 2 (GCSE Grade 4/C or equivalent) in English and Maths, you will need to study this as part of your apprenticeship.
- Join the Councils apprenticeship network where you will have the opportunity to network and participate in varied development activities.

Your development will be supported by your manager and a mentor. Additionally, you will be given dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies. You will also have access to a network of colleagues from within the organisation and tutors to support your learning.
After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a nationally recognised qualification. This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council or with another employer or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship.
