Salary Range: DAG II: Pay Range 9 – Starting salary of $68,480

DAG III: Pay Range 10 – Starting salary of $78,279

Basic Function

This position works directly with the Chief Deputy Attorney General and Senior Deputy Attorneys General in the Legal Review Section advising agency staff on the operation and oversight of administrative programs and matters within the Office of Attorney General. In this position, an employee provides varied legal services and advice on matters of moderate or significant scope and complexity. Work involves the practice of administrative and transactional law. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with administrative law and procurement processes as well as general transactional work. This position does not include the regular practice of litigation.

As a Deputy Attorney General (DAG) II gains experience, work is performed with more independence. A DAG III will work independently on most matters.

Examples of Duties

  • Advises agency staff in all divisions on various administrative topics including policies, program development and operation, and contract development and negotiation
  • Assists with legal research on a variety of topics important to the Office of Attorney General (OAG)
  • Prepares the initial draft of memoranda related to legal research on topics important to the OAG
  • Drafts, negotiates, and manages complex OAG procurements
  • Assists with the collection, review, and redaction of agency records in response to Right-to-Know Law requests
  • Examines and analyzes the legal sufficiency and form of Commonwealth contracts, leases, and bonds
  • Examines and analyzes the legal sufficiency and form of Commonwealth regulations
  • Conducts legal research in support of official Attorney General legal opinions
  • Prepares the initial draft of an official Attorney General legal opinion
  • Answers routine correspondence
  • Performs related work as required

Experience and Training

Deputy Attorney General II:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of law, admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, and a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in professional legal work
  • Two to six years of progressively responsible experience in professional legal work preferred

Deputy Attorney General III:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of law, admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, and a minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in professional legal work
  • Four to nine years of progressively responsible experience in professional legal work preferred

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of administrative, contractual, and/or regulatory law preferred
