OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The UNESCO Jordan Office works with the national authorities and people of Jordan to promote peace and sustainable development, through education, culture, sciences, communication and information. Besides supporting the implementation of UNESCO’s conventions to protect and safeguard cultural and natural heritage, the Office works to enhance access to quality education across Jordan through strengthening the national education system as well as to promote freedom of expression and access to information.

The incumbent will support the communication and visibility activities of UNESCO Jordan within the aforementioned sectors which include, but are not limited to, the following programs and projects:
In the field of Education, UNESCO is currently implementing the “System Strengthening Partnership“ (SSP) programme with the Ministry of Education, aiming to strengthening the Ministry’s core functions and complementary, the Education Management Information System will also be supported. UNESCO has also launched the initiative “Towards Greater Inclusion and Diversity in Education in Jordan”, which will improve access to and quality in education for all children and youth regardless of their gender, abilities, disabilities, backgrounds and circumstances. In support of Jordan’s Response Plan for the Syria Crisis, the project “Provision of TVET, On-The-Job-Training and Entrepreneurship Education to Youth Affected by the Syria Crisis in Jordan” provides access to TVET opportunities for both Syrian refugees and vulnerable youth in Jordan.

In Culture, UNESCO is leveraging cultural heritage for sustainable development and the creation of employment opportunities and within the Communication and Information sector, the Office is working to support national efforts in advancing Jordanian media to further increase its freedom, independence and professionalism as well as promoting media and information literacy to counter the spread of disinformation.

Long Description

Under the overall authority of the Head of the Office and direct supervision of the CI Programme Officer and the Resource Mobilization and Partnership Officer, the incumbent will be based in Amman and will undertake field visits to the project sites as needed to undertake the following duties with full respect and attention to UNESCO’s rules and regulations:

MIL Programme and Coordination:

  1. Assist in the development and implementation of activities within the work of UNESCO Jordan in Media and Information Literacy (MIL), in particular, the organization of the 2021 Global Media and Information Literacy Week activities.

  2. Participate in meetings relating to MIL and undertake missions as requested and when delegated by the National Programme Officer for CI Unit.

  3. Conduct background research and contribute to development of concept notes to support resource mobilization for MIL.

  4. Support the editing and review of documents relating to MIL, as well as the distribution and promotion of assessments and reports.

  5. Provide translation of English-Arabic or Arabic-English for MIL related documents including reports and public communication materials.

Communication and Visibility:

Writing and reviewing content

  1. In both English and Arabic, contribute to the conceptualization, production and review of information and communication materials (articles, press releases, human interest stories, video and photo material) for use in media and other advocacy and communication activities.

  2. Assist in the preparation of background communication and promotional materials for briefings and visits of media, high-level visits, donors, and other special interest groups, including press releases, programme summaries, country fact sheets and media kits.

Social Media and other Media Management

  1. Manage and keep up-to-date UNESCO Jordan’s online presence and ensure the quality and dissemination of printed and audio-visual materials through UNESCO Jordan’s social media platforms and website.

  2. Maintain and update media relations and contact list/database and ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media. Support the project staff in networking with journalists and other media figures and liaise with relevant staff at UNESCO HQ to amplify the impact of UNESCO Jordan Office’s work on the global page.

Visibility and Advocacy

  1. Contribute to campaigning efforts of UNESCO projects and programmes by developing content (e.g. images, online-based publications, video, infographics, Web pages etc.).

  2. Provide inputs to the communication strategies of UNESCO programmes, including communication of results and impacts

Other Duties

  1. Contract and manage editors, proofreaders, graphic designers, videographers and printing houses as needed.

  2. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the Head of Office.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• College Diploma degree in a relevant area, e.g. Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related social science field.

Work experience
• 3 years of relevant professional work experience in communications, print media, digital and social media, public relations or other relevant fields of work.
• 1 year of relevant professional work experience in combination with a higher-level university degree may be considered.

Competencies and skills

• Strong writing and editing skills in English and Arabic
• Expertise in communication and advocacy
• Proven experience in building strong relationships with journalists, and media outlets.
• Proven experience in development and dissemination of communication material for advocacy purposes
• Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
• Proven interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure within a multicultural environment and as part of a team
• Demonstrated proficiency in basic office software tools (MS Office suite) and email and internet as well as with programmes such as InDesign, Photoshop etc. familiarity with database management, and office technology equipment
• Self-motivated, Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and with tight.

Languages
• Fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience

• Previous experience working with UN agency or international non-governmental organisation is an asset.
• Experience working on communication and visibility in thematic areas covered by UNESCO is an asset.
