Overview

The Director of Institutional Giving produces grant applications and other documents for The Salvation Army, working collaboratively with the Development Team and Program staff to set and achieve goals, plan strategy, and manage 50+ corporate and foundation relationships. Impeccable writing skills are required. The Director of Institutional Giving researches new prospects, builds relationships with corporate and foundation partners, and prepares and submits letters of inquiry, grant proposals, budgets, reports, and other correspondence.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are the primary duties of this position but are not all the duties that may be required. Specifically, the primary duties are:

  • Research, cultivate, solicit, and steward 50+ corporate and foundation donors to achieve fundraising goals for approximately $1.5 million or more in grant funding annually.
  • Write, edit, proofread, and submit grant proposals, letters of inquiry, acknowledgment letters, final reports, budget documents, and other materials.
  • Work directly with corporations and foundations to solicit gifts and build strong community support for programs at The Salvation Army.
  • Ensure prompt acknowledgment of all gifts related to corporate and foundation giving.
  • Track gifts and goals, meet deadlines for proposals and reporting, and maintain accurate records in Salesforce for all actions, gifts, and relationships.
  • In collaboration with the Program and the Finance Development teams, plan and produce budget documents, program activity reports, updates, newsletter articles, and other materials.
  • Work with staff, board, and other internal and external partners to set and achieve goals, produce written materials, and meet grant expectations.
  • Represent The Salvation Army to internal and external partners to grow and maintain key relationships.
  • Schedule and coordinate agency site visits with corporate and foundation representatives.
  • Participate in and assist with agency events and cultivation activities as needed.
  • Supervise the Director of Government Grants and Grants Writer.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area preferred or equivalent years of professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of proven experience; at least two years of managerial experience.
  • Must be extremely organized and able to plan and implement strategies within a complex environment.
  • Must have very strong analytical skills, be able to analyze data, and develop targeted development strategies based on research.
  • Must demonstrate creativity of approach and ability to work as a member of a team to craft the right contact for a funding source.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet competing deadlines.
  • Proficiency in related technologies: Microsoft Office; Salesforce; Blackbaud system and others as needed; training provided.
  • Driver’s license and use of a vehicle required; ability to travel as needed throughout New Jersey and from time to time beyond New Jersey.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Able to work extended hours as needed.
  • Willingness to act in an “as-needed” capacity for emergencies.
