Scope:

Assist the President and CEO in developing and managing an ongoing and comprehensive fundraising, public relations, and government affairs plan for the organization, which will include targeted fundraising, public relations, and staffing goals for each year. Oversees the External Affairs Department, which includes Communications and External Affairs Managers. This is a hybrid position – the Director can work remotely up to three days per week. Anticipated time spent on each activity: fundraising 70%; supervising managers, 15%; event oversight, 10%; and government affairs, 5%.

Occupational Summary:

Works with President/CEO and Board of Directors to raise corporate, foundation, and philanthropic support for the overall organization. With the President/CEO and COO, serves as government affairs liaison for APM. Reviews, analyzes and informs the President/CEO, COO and Department staff of funding announcements from non-government sources. Writes corporate and foundation grant proposals, sponsorship solicitations and reports for overall organizational support, including fundraising for specific events. Identifies major funding prospects and develops strategic plans for cultivating their support. Creates and presents formal fundraising proposals to major funders, donors, and prospects. Maintains and augments support from current funders. Liaises with program staff to coordinate individual department development activities. Stays current in knowledge of APM activities as well as outside activities that may impact the organization. Oversees communications staff on the development and maintenance of a media relations/outreach campaign. Oversees external affairs staff in the planning and execution of all events. Represents APM at meetings with current and potential funders. Serves as main liaison to Resource Development and Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors.

Works with staff to maintain all necessary infrastructure for External Affairs and Development departments.

Duties:

  • Create, maintain and update five-year plan for External Affairs department, which includes fundraising, communications, and events management.
  • Create detailed annual fundraising plan which ties into five-year plan and will be annual fundraising blueprint for the organization to follow, including strategies for corporate, foundation, philanthropic, and individual solicitations (i.e., Annual Appeal).
  • Work with Communications and External Affairs Managers to create annual communications and events plans, which will include communications deliverables such as op-eds and a specific number of events per year.
  • Organize data and write content for letters of inquiry and/or funding proposals for foundations, government, and the private sector.
  • Track all grant proposals/letters of inquiry to foundations and the private sector, including proposal and report submission dates.
  • Track all grants (government and non-government) to keep abreast of all agency funding sources.
  • Identify potential new funding sources through Internet and other research.
  • Maintain database of potential funders and fundraising sources. Be proactive in identifying and contacting such sources.
  • Create fundraising mailings for corporate and individual donor solicitations.
  • Draft grant reports to funders as required.
  • Initiate and/or maintain relationships with current funders and elected officials; work with Communications Manager to initiate and/or maintain relationships with media outlets.
  • Track all donations and send out timely donor acknowledgements.
  • Provide weekly oral reports to President/CEO on status of fundraising and outreach activities.
  • Prepare quarterly written report to Resource Development and Marketing Committee (RDMC) and Board of Directors, updating them on fundraising and outreach activities. Make oral/written monthly presentation to Board on such activities as necessary. Schedule and staff quarterly RDMC meetings in advance of Board meeting.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with communication and external affairs managers. Coordinate with external consultants on an as-needed basis.
  • Work with communications and external affairs managers to create and/or identify activities to create positive publicity and raise funds for the organization as part of a media relations/outreach campaign, which would include an events calendar.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with department heads regarding programmatic fundraising to coordinate development activities.
  • In coordination with Communications Manager and department heads, create and produce an Annual Report.
  • Other duties as assigned by President/CEO.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years’ experience in fundraising, public relations, and event management. Fundraising experience should include successful proposal writing, event planning and organizing, and corporate and foundation solicitation, as well as experience soliciting individual donors. CFRE is preferred but not required.
  • Prior government affairs experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience in managing staff.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite and donor software.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and keep deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated marketing/public relations skills.
  • Significant project and event management experience.
  • Prior communications experience.
