Job Summary

This position manages the day-to-day payroll and benefit operational functions and two payroll and benefits staff. This position works closely on the semester call-out process for instructional appointment information collaborating with WSB’s academic departments, academic planners, and financial management office. This position serves as the instructional and graduate appointment human resources subject matter expert.

Responsibilities: Directs and develops protocol for employee payroll processing, provides troubleshooting guidance on complex payroll related issues and payroll taxes, and ensures proper government reporting and compliance in order to ensure timely and accurate payroll information processing. May direct and supervise payroll staff.

  • 10% Develops and schedules unit payroll operational work plans
  • 20% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 15% Prepares, organizes, disseminates, and processes payroll resources, communications, and materials for a designated work unit or multiple work units through various mediums independently
  • 10% Prepares and audits work unit payrolls and completes highly complex payroll transactions and changes adhering to established policies and procedures to meet anticipates deadlines
  • 10% Receives, responds to, and resolves complex employee payroll questions and problems
  • 5% Counsels new, existing, and terminating employees on payroll options, timelines, taxes, and deductions
  • 5% Represents unit/program at institutional payroll workshops, informational meetings, and training sessions
  • 5% Develops, implements, interprets, and revises work unit payroll policies and procedures according to institutional and legal rules and regulations
  • 5% Oversees irregular payments, audits reporting documentation, and ensures compliance with government reporting requirements
  • 15% Serves as a subject matter expert to human resources professionals and employees regarding payroll program information, policies, procedures, and best practices

Associate’s Degree

Qualifications

3 years of experience in payroll/benefits required.

Leadership Experience In Payroll/benefits Preferred.

Payroll/benefits experience in an academic environment highly preferred.

Knowledge of UW-Madison policies and procedures highly preferred.
