School Business Manager

We are looking for a passionate and driven individual to join our senior leadership team. You will lead all non-educational functions including finance, HR, premises management, health & safety and administration as well as having line management responsibility for the associated staff.

This is a multi-discipline role that will require meticulous time management, organisational and people skills as well as the ability to be flexible, adaptable and recognise that in education, no two days are ever the same.

Your Responsibilities Will Include, But Not Be Limited To

Finance

  • Be responsible for setting, monitoring and revising an annual budget for £2m+ public funds, whilst ensuring the medium to long-term financial viability of our school
  • Ensuring accurate recording of transactions in our finance system and take responsibility for overall integrity of our financial data
  • Ensuring all procurement is carried out in line with “value for money” principles and ensure procurement activities of our school are compliant with national legislation and local guidance
  • Identify opportunities for revenue generation to support the school’s budget
  • Report to the senior leadership team, governors and other stakeholders on the financial activity of the school
  • Having oversight and overall responsibility for all goods and services contracts purchased by the school and ensure these perform in line with the contract specifications

HR/Payroll

  • Lead on all aspects of HR providing support and advice to managers and senior leaders, to ensure all HR procedures are carried out in line with legislation and local guidance
  • Oversee and manage the production of our monthly payroll ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll data
  • Support in all aspects of recruitment and ensure all our recruitment activities are compliant with safer recruitment legislation and best practice
  • Line and performance manage all non-educational support staff

Premises/Health & Safety

  • Having oversight of our premises management function and support the site team in ensuring our school is safe and secure
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant premises and health and safety legislation with the support of the Site Manager
  • Develop medium to long-term premises development strategies
  • Assist in the management of other premises staff including our Caretaker and Cleaners
  • Ensure every effort is made in ensuring our school remains safe throughout the continued Covid-19 health pandemic

ICT

  • Manage and work in collaboration with our ICT support provider to ensure the school’s ICT systems remain fit for purpose in meeting our business and educational needs
  • Oversee the production of our ICT development strategy and ensure this it remains fit for purpose and financially sustainable
  • Take overall responsibility for ensuring compliance with ICT security requirements and data integrity (as registered Data Protection Officer)

Administration

  • Lead the administrative team to ensure first class service delivery
  • Support the administrative team in ensuring all statutory and local data collection requirements are fulfilled
  • Be pro-active in identifying efficiency savings through ongoing review and streamlining of back office processes and procedures

Safeguarding

  • Promote and support the safety and welfare or our pupils, staff and wider school community through a well-developed understanding of safeguarding practices and procedures in schools

This role would suit someone with previous experience in the School Business Manager profession, other non-educational support roles or from any industry with a well-developed understanding of one or more of these key disciplines and the ability to rapidly develop your knowledge in the other areas required for this role.

You should be suitably qualified with a professional qualification in a relevant field or have the capacity and willingness to study towards one (AAT, CSBM, DSBM, ADSBM, CIPD).
