1. PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT:

Alfanar is seeking a consultant to oversee and contribute to the revision and updating of content for five modules from Alfanar’s Sustainable Social Enterprise Training (ASSET) Programme. ASSET is a comprehensive ten-part curriculum on building a sustainable social enterprise that is offered to every organisation Alfanar works with.

2. ALFANAR BACKGROUND:

Founded in 2004, Alfanar is the first venture philanthropy organisation operating on the Arab region. We work to improve lives in disadvantaged communities by strengthening and investing in ambitious social enterprises responding to the region’s pressing needs, particularly around children’s education and women’s economic empowerment. Alfanar provides grants and technical assistance to local social enterprises, enabling them to achieve greater financial sustainability, and scale their impact.

3. ASSET background:

In addition to financial investment, we believe that management support is key to creating sustainable, scalable social enterprises. Each organisation we work with therefore receives Alfanar Sustainable Social Enterprise Training (ASSET). We also offer our ASSET training outside our existing portfolio, supporting eco-system players in the social entrepreneurship field through delivery of the full curriculum or individual modules. Our clients are typically eco-system peers and partners (accelerators, bootcamps, incubators, global venture philanthropists with no local presence), foundations, NGOs, impact investor funds, international donors, and implementers of donor-funded projects. Currently, Alfanar is seeking to update the content of five ASSET modules, namely: Theory of Change, Financial Management, Governance, Impact Modelling and Measurement, and Business Model Canvas.

4. ACTIVITIES:

  • Review the existing ASSET modules completed
  • Research and gather additional content to fill identified gaps
  • Consult with and manage subject area specialists to enhance content of each module
  • Compile, edit, and develop Alfanar’s required deliverables for each module
  • Update and incorporate feedback from Alfanar’s Investment Team and Country Directors

5. DELIVERABLES:

The main responsibility of this consultant is to manage the revision of the five existing ASSET modules, and where necessary, recruiting, overseeing and collaborating with subject specialists to deliver the revised modules.

Alfanar requires the following to be produced as part of each revised module:

  • A module that explains the concept of each topic, its purpose, and how best to implement it, using best-practice examples from around the world and the Arab region (where possible)
  • A companion piece to the above for use by trainers, with exercises and tips for use during training
  • A companion PowerPoint presentation that can be used to facilitate the above training
  • A short pre and post evaluation of training

6. EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

Alfanar is look for candidates with knowledge/experience in:

  • Experience in leading the development of adult education curriculum and training materials
  • Experience working with social enterprises and knowledge of social enterprise ecosystem (Arab world related experience is a plus, but not essential)
  • Experience in writing training modules and/or adult education curriculum
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English
  • Oral and written skills in Arabic are a plus
  • Ability to incorporate multiple stakeholder viewpoints and build consensus to produce final product
  • Ability to manage time effectively and deliver according to strict deadlines
  • Experience with project management and leadership
  • Ability to oversee and recruit consultants with area-specific expertise
  • Personal characteristics: attention to detail, self-starter, proactive, organised
