Expert legal case worker

MiCT is seeking an expert legal case worker who can support journalists and media makers from crisis and conflict regions who are having to go into exile in their visa applications. MiCT invites interested and qualified applicants to submit proposals by 23.06.2024

  1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through our collaborative work with our partners, we foster transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.

Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The case worker is to support the MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship, which is aimed at media professionals from conflict and crisis regions who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on journalists and media makers from across the globe. Fellows receive financial support, expert safety advice, online training, legal advice, psycho-social support, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

3. Description of the role

To support Fellows who are having to move into exile for security reasons, MiCT is looking for a legal expert case worker to provide guidance and legal advice on visa and work permit processes and requirements for media makers. Successful applicants will be required to support the writing of detailed case files for visa processes to European countries, the US and/or Australia. .

The service should cover the following aspects:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of individual Fellows personal situation to determine eligibility for humanitarian visas in various safe third countries
  • Assist in preparing and submitting visa applications, ensuring all necessary documentation is accurate and complete
  • Assisting in navigating the visa application procedures for European countries, US and/or Australia
  • Conduct trainings and provide updates for MiCT team members on visa application processes
  • Preparing Fellows for visa interviews

The service pertains to completing and supporting roughly 10 Fellows on a freelance basis. The process is expected to be completed by December 2024.

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Specialist knowledge of immigration and work permit systems particularly in Germany
  • Extensive experience in writing humanitarian case files and collecting the necessary information in a sensitive manner
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by media makers in the visa and work permit processes is a benefit
  • Experience in sensitive handling of personal information
  • Flexibility to work across time zones, with translators and through various means of communication
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with strong links to existing global, migration support structures
  • Fluency in English is required, working knowledge of other languages spoken in crisis and conflict regions such as Afghanistan, Sudan and Myanmar is an asset
