The Courtauld Institute of Art – Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships

Location: Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 0RN

Salary: Competitive, starting from £61,662

Contract: Permanent, full-time hours.

The Courtauld Institute of Art is seeking a Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships to play a key role in securing significant donations which advance The Courtauld’s vision to be the most critically engaged, welcoming and generous institution for the study of art, conservation and curating in the world.

The Courtauld works to advance how we see and understand the visual arts, as an internationally-renowned centre for the teaching, and research of art history and a major public gallery. Founded by collectors and philanthropists in the 1930s, the organisation has been at the forefront of the study of art ever since, through advanced research and conservation practice, innovative teaching, the renowned permanent collection and inspiring temporary exhibitions, engaging and accessible activities, education, and events.

A senior leader within the Advancement team, the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships is responsible for their own portfolio as well as leading a high performing team whose work encompasses major gifts, corporate partnerships, donor relations, legacies and stewardship. The role will be responsible for securing major gifts which help deliver new facilities for The Courtauld’s second century, as well as increase the endowment and securing funding for critical needs such as funded posts, scholarships, exhibitions and research initiatives. The portfolio of major donors assigned to the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships is principally comprised of individuals, institutional funders, foundations and trusts at the level of six and seven figure gifts.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a fundraiser, including a significant proportion as a successful principal and major gift fundraiser with demonstrable results, preferably within the arts or Higher Education sectors. You will have a track record in devising strategic direction for fundraising projects, as well as a good understanding of international fundraising, preferably with direct experience in working with donors and volunteers overseas, especially the US. Finally, you will be an experienced manager with excellent communication and leadership skills, alongside a genuine and demonstrable interest in the arts.

This is a hugely exciting time to join The Courtauld’s Advancement function, with the opportunity to work in a forward-looking institution following the widely acclaimed launch of the transformed Courtauld Gallery in November 2021 and to help shape future campaign strategy.

CLOSING DATE: Monday 5th of February 2024
