Unit Leader – Health Aide (Summer Position)

  • This is a summer position with a start date of June 9th and an end date of July 31st.

Position Summary

The Unit Leader supervises a unit of staff and campers. This position will support the health supervisor in the daily health and safety operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and supervise Unit Counselors in all capacities, including Day-to-day operations, schedules, and routines; camper behavioral management; delegating tasks and managing appropriate workloads and time off; ensure a positive atmosphere and well-being for all campers and Unit Counselors; and recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in a group setting
  • To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
  • Facilitate a supportive cabin environment where campers learn to respect one another in recognition of the differences and similarities that each share.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of a camp infirmary that is equipped with necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Review and systematically file all incoming staff and camper health forms.
  • Review camper information and share pertinent information regarding existing medical conditions and necessary precautions with staff persons that have direct responsibility for the camper.
  • Be familiar with all “standing medical orders” as written by the camp physician.
  • Act decisively and competently in medical emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding outside treatment.
  • Notifies assistant camp director when parents should be advised of serious illness or accident.
  • Cleans and organizes the infirmary at the start and end of camp.
  • Assists in implementation of the rules of State of Michigan Licensing Guidelines, County Health Department, and GSUSA.
  • Provide nightly “on-call” assistance to units, and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Be available to campers and staff at all times during on duty hours.
  • File incident/accident reports promptly.
  • Assemble and re-stock first aid kits for units and activity areas.
  • Do emergency camper laundry quickly and discreetly as needed.
  • Facilitate daily camp programming activities as assigned.
  • Assist in opening and closing of camp.
  • Facilitate daily cabin housekeeping and cabin chores (Kapers).
  • Ability to assist campers with a variety of needs such as homesickness, conflict resolution, and behavior management.
  • Follow camp policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the assistant camp director including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Preferred to be 21 years of age.
  • Prior camp experience preferred or working with youth.
  • Flexible and committed to personal and professional development.
  • Willingness to obtain a First Aid/CPR and responding to emergencies certification.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of child development stages and related needs desired as well as familiarity with healthy lifestyles.
  • Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
  • Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
  • Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
  • Must be ready and able to communicate well with girls and staff and be flexible about programming options.

Essential Requirements

  • Become a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.
