- This is a summer position with a start date of June 9th and an end date of July 31st.
Position Summary
The Unit Leader supervises a unit of staff and campers. Work with other members of the unit staff to plan, teach, coordinate, and carry out activities. They will assist with integrating the principles of the Girl Scout program into camp activities and cabin life. Unit Leaders must commit to lead by example and live by the Girl Scout Law. This unit lead will facilitate and lead all shooting sport areas on camp.
Key Responsibilities
- To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
- To facilitate archery, sling shots, axe throwing, and BB guns while at overnight camp.
- To become familiar with the age groups served and Girl Scout programming to develop and run age-appropriate shooting sport activities.
- To submit supply requests in a timely manner.
- To clean and organize supplies and equipment at both the start and end of camp.
- To keep all shooting sport areas and supplies, organized, and well-maintained daily.
- To keep a properly stocked first aid kit in winterberry and discovery center at all times.
- To actively participate in pre-camp staff training by providing training for camp staff on how to request supplies from the arts and nature center and how to use them in their age specific cabin group programming.
- To provide shooting sport related skill builder programs for campers that. Provide each camper with a shooting sport fun patch.
- To run free-choice activity sessions as needed.
- To provide age-appropriate program content in coordination with the program supervisor for age specific evening activities.
- To submit a post camp evaluation of activities including successes, failures and recommendations for the future.
- Support and supervise Unit Counselors in all capacities, including: Day-to-day operations, schedules, and routines; camper behavioral management; delegating tasks and managing appropriate workloads and time off; ensure a positive atmosphere and well-being for all campers and Unit Counselors; and recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in a group setting
- To reside in a lodge and provide support for cabin groups as needed.
- Supervise mealtimes.
- Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the assistant camp director including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
- Assist in the opening and closing of camp
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be Willing to live on site and be on call in case of emergencies.
- Preferred to be 21 years of age.
- Prior camp experience preferred or working with youth.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
- Be able to evaluate hand eye coordination skills at all levels, and supervise campers.
- Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
- Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
- Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
- Must be ready and able to communicate well with girls and staff and be flexible about programming options.
Essential Requirements
- Become a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.
- Willingness to obtain archery level 1 certification
- Willingness to obtain Range Safety Officier certification.
- Willingness to obtain American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification.
