Regional Manager for Africa

Child Helpline International

We are looking for an experienced professional with deep knowledge in programme and project management, networking, fundraising and advocacy, who has the expertise and personality to lead our regional engagements in Africa.

 

Introduction

Child Helpline International is a global network of child helplines, with 167 members in 140 countries and territories around the world (November 2021). We coordinate information, viewpoints, knowledge, and data from our child helpline members, and from partners and other external sources. This exceptional resource is used to help and support child protection systems globally, regionally, and nationally, to help our members advocate for the rights of children and amplify their voices.

 

The Regional Manager for Africa

The Regional Manager Africa is responsible for coordinating cross-functional engagements of Child Helpline International in Africa and lead the implementation of our strategy in the region. As the focal point person for the members and partners in the region, the Regional Manager Africa will play a key role in the coordination and implementation of projects/programmes, regional advocacy and campaigns and in the support of regional fundraising efforts.   

  • Reporting to: Director of Programmes
  • Relation with Board: The Regional Manager Africa will work closely with the Regional Representative and Deputy Regional Representative for Africa.

 

 

Responsibilities and tasks:

Networking 

 

  • Key focal point person for child helpline in Africa and for the partnership with the African Union Commission to support AUC Initiative activities especially the integration of Helpline tools into AUC work;
  • Network with relevant regional stakeholders for advocacy and campaigning;
  • Coordinate membership activities/events on a regional level;
  • Support the development and management of strategic projects & initiatives in the region;
  • Review and suggest adaptations of developed content used in the region;
  • Coordinate with the communications department to highlight the work of the members in the region;
  • Support the Data and Research Team with data collection and regional research.
  • Lead coordination of Regional Consultations together with Membership Manager and support team on International Consultation (Face to Face and online);
  • Maintain updated information on all the members and partners in the region.
  • Lead on the development of the regional advocacy plan;
  • Support identification and implementation of regional advocacy opportunities

 

 

Project management

  • Coordinate the implementation of the activities under LLESA including reports and meetings;
  • Key oversight of African levels project and supervise project activities;
  • Act as Supervisor/line manager for projects officer and/or consultants in charge of African level projects;
  • Lead on ongoing high level planning, monitoring and evaluation of all Africa level projects in accordance with organisational MEL framework with support from MEL consultant and Director of Programmes;
  • Development of new project budgets with the support from the Operations Team;
  • Coordinate the implementation of projects/programmes according to the project plan, making adjustments to ensure successful delivery of the project in compliance with donor requirements;
  • Coordinate the development of progress reports for donors when required with input from other team members involved;
  • Actively contribute in the development of annual action plans and the implementation of the join activities with the African Union Commission;

 

 

Fundraising and Proposal writing

  • Monitor of grant and project opportunities targeting the region;
  • Co-Lead on grant proposal writing for Africa with relevant BID Teams;
  • Contribute in the fundraising efforts for the implementation of the activities in the joint annual plan 2022 and 2023 with the African Union Commission. These efforts will include specific activities that are jointly implemented with AUC and Child Helpline International.  

 

 

Quality and Learning

Be an active member of the Learning Knowledge Working Group from Child Helpline International to establish regional learning needs for Africa;

  • Lead on the development of regional learning plan together with Network Quality Consultant and Learning and Development Coordinator, based on nested Learning and Knowledge Strategy, Quality Standards Self-Assessment and MAP.
  • Ensure alignment of learning strategy in African project proposals and activities, together with Project Officers.

 

 

Non-technical responsibilities as Child Helpline International staff

  • Positively contribute to team discussions and the effective running of the organisation;
  • Cross-departmental collaboration, compliance with organisational policies and procedures;
  • Perform other duties and tasks, consistent with the skills and expertise, as required in non-routine circumstances;
  • Be willing to adapt to different tasks and different cross-organisational tasks, this includes but is not limited to Child Helpline International events such as the International Conferences and staff retreats.

 

 

Expertise and Requirements:

 

The candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • A (Masters) degree in a subject related to international development, social sciences or similar;
  • At least five years’ proven experience in international programmes in Africa within the children’s rights sector; 
  • Experience in the NGO sector; 
  • A broad knowledge of international relations and regional dynamics; 
  • General Knowledge of the African Union Commission system and Africa child rights strategy and Legal instruments; 
  • Excellent written verbal and communication skills, public speaking and presentation skills; 
  • Creative, analytical and pro-active personality; 
  • Ability to handle multiple programmes and work under pressure;  
  • Ability to work in a large team; 
  • Fluency in English. Any other language would be an advantage (French, Portuguese, Swahili);
  • Proven networking skills; 
  • Advanced ICT skills (MS Office).

 

This is a consultancy contract, home based and open only to nationals of one of the Eastern and Southern Africa countries, and preferably based in Ethiopia.

 

Essential Information:

  • This is a 0.8 FTE OR 32 hours/week position
  • The initial contract is for 12 months
  • Ideal start date is April 1, 2022
  • Occasional travel on behalf of the organisation or project is required; 
  • You must live and have a valid work permit for Eastern or Southern Africa  

 

Remuneration

€ 2.300,00- 2.800,00 (based on 0.8 FTE)
